Zhao Shao"ang, an acclaimed contemporary Chinese artist, is well known for his being a leading master of the Lingnan School of Art. 

Zhao Shao"ang (1905-1998), designated name Yuan, alias Shuyi, was born in 1905 in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. In 1920, he learnt painting from Gao Qifeng, one of the founders of the Lingnan School of Art. In 1930, Prof. Zhao"s work was awarded a gold medal at the International World Fair in Belgium. In the same year, he founded the Lingnan Art Studio (Lingnan Yiyuan) at Guangzhou, where he taught students and passed on his skills. In 1948, he moved to Hong Kong and reestablished the Lingnan Art Studio, carrying on with his painting and teaching. Throughout his stay in Hong Kong, he was invited from time to time to hold exhibitions and give lectures in various countries in Asia, Europe and America, wining himself numerous awards and honours. In 1998, he passed away in Hong Kong at the age of 93. 

Inheriting the innovative character of the Lingnan School, Prof. Zhao"s works absorb much nourishment from external sources and demonstrate a harmonious blending of Chinese and Western art. He grasped the wonder of nature and sought for a perfect synthesis of nature and art. His strokes are straightforward and yet powerful, which make his works completely break away from the tradition of literati painting.
