To commemorate the 69th Anniversary of the Victory of the Anti-Japanese War: Exhibition of Liao Bingxiong’s Caricatures on the Anti-Japanese War

The so called Art of Anti-Japanese War was a special and splendid chapter in Chinese art history. In 1937 when the Lugouqiao Bridge Incident burst, the invasion to China plotted by Japan was triggered at once. The political, economic and cultural center had been moved to Southwest China since then. Under the banner of patriotism against Japanese invasion, artists who suffered from the war became united unprecedented in the rear area and released massive creativities, contributing their power for the salvation of the nation. During this hard time, Chinese art developed solemnly and furiously. Caricatures, exaggerate, sarcastic, humorous art form which is also understandable by common people, flourished and entered a new phase. Liao Bingxiong, without any question, was a new shining star during this period.
Liao also reached his first golden era in caricature creation during this time. He went for Guilin and Chongqing to join the artists’ alliance for War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, which was exactly the theme in his works during this period. His works were published in large numbers on newspapers such as Jiuwang Daily and magazines, encouraging people to fight against Japan. Huang Miaozi once commented: Liao Bingxiong is a patriotic fighter against invasion, and his caricature is the ammo.
For the exhibition, we select more than 30 pieces of Liao’s works and focused on the theme of the Anti-Japanese War. We truly hope that the audiences are able to appreciate Liao’s early style and his calling for justice, memorizing the magnificent art movement against invasion and those who sacrificed their lives during the war. We shall always keep our history in mind and live up to the expectation of our ancestors.
