Joint Painting Exhibition of Pu Ru and Xiao Xun
The Republic of China was a time of change, and the search new ideas reached every corner of the field of culture. Facing the fading of Chinese paintings in the late Qing Dynasty, many intellectuals criticized the conventionalism of Chinese paintings. Chinese painters sought and explored innovation and development during that era. Although many of them deeply understood the cultural connotations of traditional paintings, especially the spirit of literati paintings and accepted the unique artistic style of Chinese paintings and explored its traditions, they adopted new methods after carefully studying ancient paintings. Pu Ru and Xiao Xun are such painters.
Pu Ru and Xiao Xun were famous Beijing painters during the Republic of China (1911-1949). Landscapes are the main theme of their paintings and a continuation of literati painting concepts. They focus on creating a pastoral mood, presenting character, expressing feeling, and searching for spiritual sustenance in landscapes.
